What is it that you bring to the table? What is it you do that fashions a different perspective; provokes an altered thought pattern or creates something new within your team and eventually the Company you work for?
Did that question make you think? Hopefully so.
If we no longer make a difference what would be the ultimate reward for all the stakeholders?
Whether we want to acknowledge this or not, we all have been employed for one or other skill(s) we possess and if that skill(s) is no longer required, well then we will have a tough time convincing everybody that we are indeed a force to be reckoned with. Times are too demanding for us to just float along like a stick in a stream. It’s unfair towards ourselves and to those around us.
Unfortunately, or fortunately depending on how one looks at progress, things change…they have to… and in most cases we need to adapt our skills in order to align them with the changes that are happening all around us. Just think about how some of our beloved senior members of society were left behind with all the technological evolvement that happened over the last couple of years? Are you unknowingly “preparing” to end up in the same predicament?
Here’s some good news. The only person who can ensure that her skills stay in demand is you. Trust me, that is good news as you don’t have to be dependent on others for what the future of your skills. Furthermore, the only way to keep your skills in demand is by ensuring that you are constantly developing them. Easy? Nope. True? Yes. That’s just the way it is. You cannot “cling” to ancient ways and knowledge and hope that you will be the talk of the town. You might become the talk of the town eventually, but for all the wrong reasons.
You need to add value. There is no way around this one. Sure, there are some who can make their worth heard by being this loud and energetic party-like creature. These guys make sure everybody knows how important they are. Others, on the other hand, do this from behind the scenes. How-ever, loud or not, somewhere down the line your skills will be in demand and if they are not up to scratch at that point you will have some explaining to do.
